How we make a difference

Authentic AccommodationNature RetreatsCulinary DelightsCultural Heritage Experience

Transportation:

Whenever possible we use the safe, efficient, and convenient public transportation. This is the most environmentally friendly way of moving and also the best way to get to know the area as experienced by locals. In addition to lowering our carbon footprint, reducing traffic congestion helps maintain the region’s relaxing pace of life. We will also have the chance to travel by an innovative green taxi boat that operates on solar panels when we visit the Fonda Fish Farm.

Accommodation:

Hotel Tartini is a boutique hotel with a cosy spirit and a strong commitment to the environmental and social health of the region. Hotel Tartini is in the heart of Piran’s Healthy Lifestyles Tourism Network, a group of like-minded tourism service providers, offering healthy, authentic Istrian experiences. The hotel is a hub for regional leadership supporting truly sustainable tourism. Hotel Tartini’s commitment to lead by example shows in many small details such as eco shampoo, energy-efficient light bulbs, motion detectors, and the incorporation of local food whenever possible.

Tartini is located on Piran’s bustling main square, in walking to all of the city’s attractions. It has great sea views from the balcony and views of the starry skies from the rooftop terrace. The rooms are comfortably appointed, and the hotel offers breakfast on a lovely little al fresco dining terrace when the weather is nice. The staff is warm and friendly and they are committed to Tartini’s mission to treat guests like family, to protect the environment, to supporting local culture, and to support local sustainable businesses.

Local Food:

There has been a growing uncertainty over the future of farms in the region, triggered by declining profitability of local food production. Some farmers and farming communities have diversified within agriculture; others have had to look for opportunities in other areas – such as tourism - not to be solely reliant on agricultural income. The Persimmon Festival in Strunjan, initiated by family farm Knez, is a great example how tourism can contribute to the revitalization of local fruit production, boost local incomes, and sustain local pride in tradition. Our adventures are closely intertwined with the high quality, traditional, nutritious food of the region.

Traditional Livelihoods:

By visiting Sečovlje salt pans, traditional houses, and operational family farms we are safeguarding and enhancing the natural and cultural assets of Istria. Our tour supports meaningful involvement with the local community, thus enhancing local people’s quality of life, supporting them in expressing their talents and seizing new business opportunities. Commitments of Piran Network Members

Piran Healthy Lifestyles Tourism Network is created around people with passion, humour, and joy for active lifestyles, food preparation, sustainable businesses, culture and art.

We are a collaborative network of small local business owners working together to create attractive, authentic tourism experiences that support the values and aspirations of our communities.

1.       Commitment to health and wellbeing

We are committed to bringing regular physical activities into your life during your stay in northern Istria. Activities ranging from working in the salt pans to hiking or jogging in nature fill us with positive energy, a sense of satisfaction, and a feeling of being reborn.

Sometimes doing nothing is also healthy and enjoyable. We are committed to making sure that guests have time to just savour the moment or take in all the beauty of the Istrian surroundings (not pushing you to frenetically visit as many attractions as possible).

Healthy delicious food is also one of our primary focuses. We offer locally grown produce (which contains more vitamins and is generally more nutritious) and we give you the opportunity to make direct face-to-face connections with growers and producers and to and learn their stories firsthand.

2.       Commitment to authenticity

Our commitment to authenticity comes from a fascination with our own unique cultural heritage, people, and traditions including saltmaking, fishing, farming, food preparation, music and art. We share deep respect for the local communities and make sure that they are involved in designing the details of our tours. Once again, traditional culinary arts play a big role in cultural expression and we do our best to offer authentic food which highlights the diversity and the character of our region.

3. Commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility

The Network is working to implement several initiatives to raise awareness and promote higher standards of sustainability for our region. Our focus areas are:

    1. Vision and Strategy – clearly articulate a vision of sustainable tourism and a plan for how to get there.
    2. Invest in people – human resource development (training and awareness raising)
    3. Environmental management – energy, waste, transportation
    4. Communities – identify community benefits, employ local services and people
    5. Purchasing – working with suppliers over time to ‘green’ and ‘relocalize’ the supply chain
    6. Sense of place – support the environmental and cultural heritage of our region (use native plant species for landscaping, showcase local culture through food, art, and handicrafts)

 4. Commitment to learning and sharing

We are committed to sharing and collaborating within our Network. We believe that jointly we can create positive synergies that will give our guests a richer experience and help our businesses and our communities flourish.
